Three questions that reveal whether the proposed contract fits your situation.

No need to become an expert. Three questions are enough to surface what an illustration does not show.

How long does this need last?

A need that ends — a loan, dependent children — calls for term. A need that does not end — tax at death, settlement costs — calls for permanent. The answer determines the product, not the other way around.

What happens at the end of the term?

Ask for the renewal rate and the conversion age limit. A renewable term policy continues at your attained age, often far more expensive; an expired conversion right is worth nothing.

What is not covered?

Have the exclusions, the suicide clause, and the contestability period named. Those are the only parts of the contract that matter when a claim is made.

And a fourth, for you

Did I answer the medical questionnaire accurately? That is the question that decides whether the contract will work. A good-faith omission is enough to open a contestation.
